African baskets, woven entirely by hand and chosen for their form as much as their function. Our collection brings together two traditions. From Northern Ghana come elephant grass baskets, split, twisted and dyed by hand, then woven into generous bowls, rounded vessels and fringed pieces with real character. From Zimbabwe come baskets in Ilala palm, coloured with plant dyes by groups of women weavers in Binga, Matabeleland and the Hwange area.
Use them as storage for throws, linen and books, as planters, or simply let them stand on their own as decorative baskets. Grouped together, their colours and textures bring warmth to a calm interior; on their own, the larger pieces hold a room like a sculpture.
Every basket is made by one weaver, so small differences in weave and colour are part of its character.
