Inspired by the traditional kenkia, a large water-carrying gourd once used in everyday life, this handwoven elephant grass basket takes its name and generous, rounded silhouette from this humble object. Its vibrant bands of colour bring a joyful, sculptural touch to contemporary interiors.

Handcrafted by Gurunsi weavers in the Bolga region of Northern Ghana, each basket is made from locally sourced veta vera elephant grass. The stalks are carefully split, twisted into strong strands and dyed in boiling water. Harvesting only the upper part of the plant allows the roots to remain intact and grow back. The supple fibres are then woven upward from the base, row by row, with the colourful patterns created from memory rather than a written design. The result is a unique piece that celebrates the skill and creativity of Ghanaian basket weaving.

You can style the Kenkia Basket on its own as a sculptural floor accent. With its rounded shape and lively colours, it brings warmth, texture and character to any interior.

Elephant grass

All baskets are made from a fiber called Elephant grass grown locally, it gets dyed, then twisted and eventually artistically woven into the most incredible shapes.
