Art Baskets

Art Baskets

Some baskets are made to hold things; these are made to be looked at. Our art baskets come from the weavers of Northern Ghana, where elephant grass has been shaped into baskets for generations. Each piece is woven from start to finish by a single weaver, and the largest can take weeks of patient work.

Here the craft becomes sculpture. Flowing shapes rise and turn, surfaces are shaped in waves, and long, loose fringes fall from the rim like the branches of a baobab. Natural grass meets bold graphic patterns in black, terracotta or colour.

Placed on the floor of an entrance hall, beside a staircase or in the corner of a generous living room, an art basket gives a space its focal point. Interior designers use them as a warm, textural counterpoint to clean architecture. No two are alike, and each carries the rhythm of the hand that made it.
